Vehicle hoists are available to lift a person from a wheelchair to a passenger or driver seat. These are either externally or internally mounted and are available in two types of operation: - manual hydraulic, ie. uses a lever pump handle to operate or electric hydraulic, ie. uses a push button control box.
Many companies manufacture vans that with modifications are suitable for transporting people in wheelchairs, ie. with wheelchair hoist or ramps, wheelchair restraints, raising the roof and/or door opening heights, alteration of seating arrangements, etc.
Checklist of points to consider when selecting a vehicle hoist to lift a person in a wheelchair into a van or bus.
The Car Caddie is designed to assist transferring in or out of a car, van or truck. It consists of a strap and handle which attaches around the door frame of the vehicle with a buckle closure. The nylon strap is adjustable in length enabling the height of the handle to be altered to suit the person and window height. The handle surface is cushioned.
Plastic car door opener suitable for push button lift up type car door handles. It is rubber tipped to help protect car paintwork for people with arthritis or weak grip.
This system is designed to eliminate blind spots while reversing a vehicle. A 90mm multi directional LCD colour monitor is mounted onto the windscreen. A discrete 15mm diameter camera is mounted on the rear of a vehicle. This camera is weatherproof and has a 130 degree viewing angle. The driver can see what is behind their vehicle by glancing up at the monitor.
A forward facing car seat suitable for children and small adults. It comprises a moulded seat shell with a removable padded cover, adjustable padded head supports and a shoulder harness with padded crotch strap. Four positioning pads are also included. Two seat extension sizes are optional. The Car Seat is available in two sizes.
An occupational therapist at Calvary Rehab and Geriatric Service (Kogarah) offers a driving assessment and training service which includes an Off and On road assessment and, if appropriate, driving instruction from a qualified instructor.
