No image available

Overview

Short Description

It is not necessary by law for electric wheelchairs under 250 kg to be
registered or to have lights attached. However, written permission is
needed from the local RTA manager to authorise the driver of such a vehicle traveling from to specific location/s if she/he wish to travel along public roads at night without lights.

Additional Info

Factors To Consider

. For safety reasons when crossing the road it is advisable to have
reflectors / reflector strips attached to rear and sides of the wheelchair.
. An unregistered vehicle, eg. a powered wheelchair, which travels on
public roads must be covered by third party insurance.
. Any vehicle over 250 kg that uses public roads must be registered with Department of Motor Transport, and therefore must have proper lights.
