Draft National Pain Strategy from PDCNSW

18th January 2010

The Physical Disability Council of NSW is currently preparing a paper in response to the Draft National Pain Strategy and would appreciate your feedback. In brief the draft strategy recognises that one in five Australians suffer from chronic pain, and identifies the following issues that you may experience:

  • The chronic pain that you experience is not officially recognised by bureaucracy
  • Family, friends, employers and health professionals commonly do not understand your issues and concerns
  • Many health professionals will have received little or no training in how to treat your condition
  • You become angry due to the wait time to see a specialist
  • This condition makes you feel depressed, anxious, and isolated from your community
  • Due to limited access to community- based support you become frustrated and isolated
  • Your pain impacts on your work productivity, impacting on your ability to remain employed
  • Fees and costs associated with your treatment just exacerbate your already numerous costs of disability.

As part of the response currently being prepared by PDCN, we would appreciate your feedback to the questions listed below. Please provide comment to by Wednesday 20 January 2010 to Jordana Goodman at jordanagoodman@pdcnsw.org.au

Question 1 What is the impact of pain on your day-to-day life?

Question 2 Is the health care support for people experiencing pain adequate?

Question 3 What health initiatives do you believe are essential?
